NTHU Anniversary Concert to be Held at the National Taichung Theater

As part of its 112th anniversary and the 67th anniversary of its reestablishment in Taiwan, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) will hold a concert at the National Taichung Theater on May 29th. The concert will be performed by the NTHU Orchestra and Chorus, which also performed the school’s anniversary concert at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts in 2021.
Department of Music director Chang Fang-yu (張芳宇) said that the Department went all out in preparing for the concert. While full-time Music Department teacher Cheng Chiung-ying (程瓊瑩) will be performing piano solo, Hsu Yong-chieh (許詠傑) will be performing violin solo. Overall, the number of students performing and working behind the scenes will exceed 200.
The pieces to be performed at the concert spans romantic, classical, and modern styles, including Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major, Beethoven's Choral Fantasia in C minor, and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. The Orchestra will be conducted by Toni Huang (黃東漢), formerly the conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Chorus will be conducted by Department of Music lecturer Yang I-chen (楊宜真).
The concert begins with Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major, featuring a violin solo by Hsu Yong-chieh, who went to Moscow at the age of 15 to begin advanced training, and is the first Taiwanese violinist to graduate from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. At the age of 18 he participated in the All-Russian Music Competition and won the top prize in the violin solo category. The 29-year-old Hsu is a rising star in Taiwan’s classical music scene.
The second half of the concert begins with Beethoven's Choral Fantasia in C minor, one of the few orchestral works by Beethoven including a chorus. The piece begins with a delicate piano solo, augmented by successive layers of orchestral music, and culminates in a powerful choral crescendo featuring the lines “All things must pass, light replaces darkness,” indicating the winding down of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Chang said that the merger between NTHU and National Hsinchu University of Education (NHCUE) seven years ago has invigorated the Department of Music with innovative thinking and interdisciplinary opportunities, making the Department a popular choice for aspiring musicians. Cheng, who has been teaching piano at NTHU for many years, said that in addition to specializing in performance, NTHU students have lots of opportunities to combine music with technology and other areas.
Chang thanked the Alumni Association, the Alumni Association of Central Taiwan, and the Tsing Hua Club One Hundred for their sponsorship and support of the concert. The last two anniversary concerts concluded with the audience joining the Chorus in singing the school song, and many are looking forward to the same at the National Taichung Theater.
