Located on the lawn in front of the TSMC Building, Confrontation, Conversation (2013) consists of a huge granite go board on which the upright playing pieces made of stainless steel plates and copper bars seem to be dancing, creating a dynamic visual effect within three-dimensional space. The stately ease of this distinctive work of public art stands in lively juxtaposition to the vigor generated by the dynamic maneuvering suggested by the black and white playing pieces. |
In November 2010, as a prelude to the university’s hundredth anniversary celebration, Hsieh Hong-liang(謝宏亮), who graduated from the Department of Physics in 1973, donated this replica of Rodin’s The Thinker (Le Penseur沈思者) from his personal collection. Located in front of the Learning Resources Center (Macronix Building), The Thinker measures 180 × 150 × 94 cm. The Thinker was originally the central figure of a doorway surround commissioned in 1880 titled The Gates of Hell, which is based on Dante’s Divine Comedy. Afterwards, Rodin made a series of plaster versions of this figure, but it was only in 1902 that he completed the first large-scale bronze casting. Since then, The Thinker has been recast in various sizes. Amongst the large-scale bronzes, 21 were authorized by Rodin himself and the Musée Rodin; beginning in 1998, an additional 25 bronze reproductions have been cast by the Valsuani Foundry, the last of which is the one now on display at NTHU. |
Located on the lawn in front of the TSMC Building, Leaf (2017) is the creation of the noted Spanish landscape artist Juanjo Novella. This eye-catching piece of landscape art gives the impression of a butterfly getting ready to take off. With a height of 8.7 meters and a width of 7.5 meters, the sculpture is slightly tilted, and weighs about eight metric tons. Made by drilling over ten thousand holes into steel plates, despite its huge mass, it has a lightweight and elegant feel, and only touches the ground at three points. Sunlight passing through the rust-colored veins projects a flowing tapestry of light and shadow. |
