National Tsing Hua University will present its third annual Tsinghua Mid-Autumn Moon-Celebrating Concert Series from September 19 to October 3, featuring four music and arts events across campus. The program includes a wind ensemble concert on the Great Lawn, a documentary screening honoring a renowned acoustics expert, a faculty-student concert, and a lakeside performance. The series will culminate in Finale: A Starry Night by the Lake, which will bring the stage onto Lake Success for the first time. Two vocalists will perform on stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), singing beloved Disney classics from the movies Aladdin and Tangled. With moonlight, shimmering water, and orchestral music coming together, the performance will create a one-of-a-kind musical experience at NTHU.

Fang-Yu Chang, Director of the NTHU Concert Hall and Dean of the College of Arts, said that since its launch in 2024, the Tsing Hua Mid-Autumn Moon-Celebrating Concert Series has sought to bring music beyond the traditional concert hall and into spaces such as lawns, lakesides, and everyday campus life. This year's series centers on the themes of technology, tradition, and interdisciplinary collaboration, continuing NTHU's exploration of new performance formats and venues. Chang notes that the concerts will bring together NTHU students, faculty, alumni, and residents of Hsinchu under the moonlight. She hopes that the series will become a shared autumn tradition for the university and the city.

The series opens on September 19 on the NTHU Campus Green with Winds Arise: Tsing Hua Wind Ensemble – A Night Beyond Dimensions. Led by conductor Yu-Piao Hou, the NTHU Wind Orchestra will perform pieces that include a Hayao Miyazaki Medley, the Detective Conan theme, songs from Haikyu!!, and ABBA GOLD, a medley of Western classics. Tsun-Hung Tsai, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Art and Technology, has also created visual animations specifically for the concert. The visuals will be projected on a large screen in sync with the music, creating an immersive audiovisual experience.

Starting at 3 p.m. that afternoon a Moonlight Market will kick off, inviting the public to bring family and friends to explore the market and enjoy a picnic on the lawn before welcoming the evening concert. Visitors who participate in the activities and complete a questionnaire will also receive a limited-edition picnic mat while supplies last.

On September 21, the series will move to the ZYXEL Auditorium for a screening of the documentary Turning Architecture: The Life of Albert Xu in Sound, honoring renowned acoustics expert Albert Xu. Xu was involved in the acoustic design of the NTHU Concert Hall. Before the screening, audiences will also have the opportunity to watch rare footage from a symposium held during Xu's visit to NTHU in 2023.

The documentary traces Xu's six-decade career in architectural acoustics through some of his best-known projects, including the Louvre Pyramid, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, and the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying). It also explores how he has transformed architecture into spaces that can truly “sing.”

On September 23, Musical Legacy Ⅲ will extend the spirit of a Mid-Autumn reunion to the relationship between teachers and students. Chang and Wei-Lung Li, Chair of NTHU's Department of Music, will lead faculty and students on stage, joined by NTHU Artist-in-Residence and cellist Chien-An Chen, as well as French horn player Chi-Yang Wang. The concert continues the faculty-student performance tradition established over the previous two years.

NTHU music faculty and students will perform a selection of classical works, including excerpts from Mozart's operas and Carmen Fantasy by Pablo de Sarasate. Music master's student Chia-Wei Ma, who recently won First Prize and Outstanding Award in the Violin Solo, University A Division, at the 2025 National Student Music Competition, will also perform Dvořák's Piano Quintet in A Major alongside Lee and other NTHU music students. The performance will bring musicians from different generations together on stage, creating an opportunity for artistic exchange and musical transmission.

The series will conclude on the evening of October 3 with Finale: A Starry Night by the Lake, performed by HPYO. NTHU alumni Lin-Yen Chang and Ya-Han Yang will serve as vocalists. For the first time, the performance stage will extend from the lakeside onto the lake itself, with the two singers paddling out onto Lake Success on SUP boards to perform songs from Aladdin and Tangled. The program will also feature a selection of beloved Disney film scores and classic works from films and musicals, including Frozen, The Phantom of the Opera, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Lantern-shaped balloons will also rise above the lakeside, accompanied by orchestral music and light art. Under the moonlight, audiences will be invited to spend a Mid-Autumn evening at Lake Success surrounded by music, light, and the atmosphere of the season.

Chang said NTHU hopes the Tsing Hua Mid-Autumn Moon-Celebrating Concert Series will become an annual campus tradition, bringing students, faculty, alumni, and residents of Hsinchu back to NTHU each autumn for a shared celebration. All four events are open to the public, although advance tickets are required for some performances. For details, please visit the NTHU Concert Hall Facebook page.
