Introduction of Dr. Irwin Jacobs 
Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, a world-renowned electrical engineer, is Founding Chairman and CEO Emeritus of Qualcomm Incorporated. Qualcomm is an iconic, global semiconductor company that designs, manufactures, and markets digital wireless telecommunications products and services. (http://www.qualcomm.com) National Tsing Hua University recognizes Dr. Jacobs for his pioneering work on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology, which is deployed in billions of mobile phones worldwide; and for his outstanding entrepreneurship that created a global wireless telecommunications company; and for his profound respect for education and human dignity. Dr. Jacobs is also the recipient of National Tsing Hua University’s Honorary Distinguished Chair Professorship. 

Dr. Jacobs is the recipient of numerous industry, education and business awards. Here we only name a few. 
   ● In 2013, Dr. Jacobs received the IEEE Medal of Honor, the highest award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Also in 2013, Dr. Jacobs was inducted into the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s National Inventors Hall of Fame. 
   ● Marconi Society Fellowship & Prize, 2011. Dr. Irwin Jacobs has been recognized for his tremendous contribution to cellular communications development worldwide. 
   ● In 2001, Dr. Jacobs won the Bower Award for business leadership. Dr. Jacobs was recognized as the rare individual who had combined scientific and technical ingenuity with entrepreneurial spirit, strong business leadership, and philanthropic spirit to become a leader in intersecting arenas. 
   ● In 1994, Dr. Irwin Jacobs won the National Medal of Technology and Innovation (NMTI), which is the America’s highest honor for technological achievement, bestowed by the President of the United States on America’s leading innovators. 
   ● In 1985, Dr. Jacobs founded San-Diego-based Qualcomm, the $11 Billion wireless technology company, with six cohorts. He served as its Chief Executive Officer until July 2005.His son Paul has been CEO of Qualcomm since 2005 
   ● In 1969 Dr. Jacobs founded LINKABIT Corporation, serving as a Co-Founder, President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman, directing its growth from a few part-time employees to more than 1,400 employees in 1985 and first introduction of Ku-band Very Small Aperture Earth Terminals, commercial TDMA wireless phones, and the VideoCipher satellite-to-home TV system. 
   ● From 1966 to 1972, Dr. Jacobs had served as a professor of computer science and engineering at the University of California, San Diego ( UCSD ). 
   ● From 1959 to 1966, Dr. Jacobs was an assistant, then associate professor of electrical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT ). 

In total, Dr. Jacobs holds 14 patents issued and other pending. 

Books : While in MIT, Dr. Jacobs co-authored with Mr. John M. Wozencraft to publish a book “ Principles of Communication Engineering” in June 1965, which remains in use today. 

Dr. Jacobs and his wife Joan have been cited by Business Week and Chronicles of Philanthropy among the 50-Most –Generous Philanthropists in the United States. 

   ● Dr. Jacobs and his wife, Joan, pledged $133 million in April 2013 to Cornell and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology to create the “Joan and Irwin Jacobs Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute” at New York City's Roosevelt Island. 
   ● Dr. Jacobs and his wife, Joan, donated $30 million of fellowships to MIT in 2007. 
   ● Dr. Jacobs and his wife, Joan, pledged more than $100 million to the San Diego Symphony. 
   ● In 2010, Jacobs and his wife, Joan gave $75 million to the University of California, San Diego health system.
