NTHU celebrated its 113th founding anniversary and the 68th anniversary of its establishment in Taiwan today.
National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan celebrated its 113th founding anniversary and the 68th anniversary of its re-establishment in Taiwan with the theme, "NTHU Energized!" President W. John Kao (高為元) emphasized alumni's engagement's pivotal role in propelling the university forward amid global challenges.
Under President Kao's leadership, NTHU has achieved notable milestones, securing NT$3.3 billion for sustainable development, including scholarships and student enrichment programs. He also led a campus marathon, rallying support for the Sports Development Fund.
Led by Chairman Eric Tsai (蔡進步), the Alumni Association highlighted NTHU's vast global network, which includes 39 overseas alumni chapters. The Class of '74, celebrating their 50th reunion, had the highest turnout ever, with many alumni traveling back to NTHU from abroad, showcasing their strong bond with their alma mater. The Association pledged to continue connecting with internal and external resources to support NTHU's talent development.
General Manager Brian Shieh (謝再居) of Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) reaffirmed the company's commitment to NTHU, pledging continued support for semiconductor research and development.
Shieh highlighted how NTHU's motto of "Self-discipline and Social Commitment" has fostered countless successful leaders that have been recognized globally. He emphasized the profound significance of this year's theme, "NTHU Energized!", expressing confidence in the university's ability to continue radiating boundless new energy for a brighter tomorrow in Taiwan.
Half a century ago, NTHU's undergraduate programs consisted of only four departments: Nuclear Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Despite having only 183 graduates in 1974, this year's reunion of '74 alumni saw a remarkable turnout of 63 attendees from around the world. Clad in coordinated purple shirts, they echoed their alma mater's spirit with chants of "Go, NTHU! We are NTHU!"
Dr. Jonq-Min Liu (劉仲明), a '74 alumnus and former president of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), reflected on NTHU's forward-looking education during Taiwan's developmental stages. Alumni, after studying at top international universities, realized that the caliber of education they received at NTHU was on par with global standards, instilling a lifelong sense of gratitude towards their alma mater.
Distinguished alumni shared their experiences, highlighting both NTHU's impact on their careers and their commitment to giving back. Mr. Shih-Lun Huang's (黃士倫) contribution to the Rising Sun Program exemplifies the alumni's dedication to supporting underprivileged students.
Huang recalled receiving the Zhu Shun Yi Zyxel scholarship during his junior year, which inspired him to assist fellow students in need. Believing in education's transformative power, he aims to continue supporting students in need to perpetuate a cycle of hope.
The ceremony, which showcased the university's influence on global leaders, honored outstanding alumni, including cultural and social advocate Hsiao-Yu Chen (陳筱宇), Executive Vice President of Quanta Computer Wen-Hung Tsai (蔡文弘), founder of FitTech Technology Chiu-Tien Hsu (徐秋田), and Mina Chiang (江玉敏), the youngest distinguished alumna in NTHU's history.
The main theme of this year's celebration is "NTHU Energized! School administrators and alumni representatives placed energy balls into cylinders representing the Talent Fund and other funds.
