National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) held its commencement on the 15th.
National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan held its 2024 commencement on June 15th, celebrating its 5,295 graduates, including the first graduates from the College of Semiconductor Research. The ceremony featured a keynote address by international superstar Brigitte Lin (林青霞), who shared her journey of overcoming self-doubt and finding happiness through continuous learning and embracing personal interests.
President W. John Kao (高為元) to Graduates: Embrace Confidence, Make Bold Choices
President W. John Kao addressed the graduates, reminding them that as they leave the campus, they will face the challenges of living as an independent adult in society, which is not an exam with “correct answers.” He advised graduates to listen to their inner voices when making career choices rather than conforming to societal expectations. “Don't use other people's standards to measure your own worth,” he said.
“So today, allow me to remind you what you have in your toolbox: self-confidence,”Kao said. He noted that the fact that they were all present at commencement means that they already have the brains and the abilities to overcome challenges and make hard decisions. “Believe in yourself and have the courage to take the next step.”
Brigitte Lin: Happiness Comes from Embracing Your Passions
Brigitte Lin recounted the transition from her simple student life to the complexities of the film industry. Despite her rapid rise to fame, she faced significant self-doubt and low self-esteem, feeling disconnected from the happy and confident image others saw in her.
Lin shared how she eventually found true happiness through writing, painting, and actively engaging with the world around her. She realized the joy of learning and the importance of following her passions rather than trying to meet others' expectations. Lin emphasized that pursuing personal interests leads to genuine joy and fulfillment.
“I want to end with a dedication of my love to you,” Lin concluded, wishing the graduates success and encouraging them to spread happiness.

Top graduate Min Jiang (江敏) praised the prestigious faculty and valuable experiences at the College of Semiconductor Research, which included summer courses at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and collaborations with the Industrial Technology Research Institute. Jiang is set to begin her career at TSMC.
Undergraduate Representatives: “Once Part of Tsing Hua, Always Part of Tsing Hua”
Undergraduate representatives Chen-Yin Ko (柯淳尹) and Hsi-Yu Ho (何習與) reflected on the impact of the pandemic on campus life and the university's diverse and inclusive culture. “These shared memories will always connect us because ‘once part of Tsing Hua, always part of Tsing Hua.'”
