NTHU Establishes the Executive Bauhinia Award to Reward Outstanding Administrative Personnel

National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan has introduced the “Executive Bauhinia Award" to recognize and reward exceptional administrative staff. This initiative, an extension of the "Tsing Hua Talent Development Fund" that previously focused on faculty, will commence next year. Ten percent of civil service and university employees will be eligible for the awards, with the top prize amounting to NT$100,000.

NTHU recently established and passed the “Regulations for National Tsing Hua University Talent Development Fund Administrative Performance Incentives,” which aims to reward administrative staff for their proactive, enthusiastic attitudes and innovative suggestions. This initiative is designed to retain talented staff and attract more exceptional individuals, fostering a creative and supportive environment at NTHU.

NTHU President W. John Kao (高為元) emphasized that a great university requires not only outstanding faculty and students but also exceptional administrative personnel. The collective efforts of staff from various departments are essential to ensure smooth operations and support the university's teaching, research, and service missions.

President Kao noted that the ratio of faculty to staff at top foreign universities is approximately between 1:3 to 1:5, whereas at domestic public universities, it is about 1:1. This indicates that NTHU's staff has to work harder to maintain smooth operations.

"I hope to spotlight the administrative staff who quietly contribute," Kao said. He hopes the new system will provide substantial bonuses and remind everyone of the importance of administrative personnel, giving more recognition and respect to exceptional assistants, technicians, and security personnel. "Without them, the university couldn't function even for a day."

NTHU Personnel Office Director, Chung-Hung Hsu (徐宗鴻) explained that the previous reward system for technical and contract staff awarded about 5% of them each year. This year, approximately 40 people were awarded, and even though the new system has yet to be officially implemented, the bonus amounts have already increased.

Lhsu stated that the new reward system will officially launch next year, doubling the number of awardees and increasing the bonuses. Five percent of the administrative staff will be selected for the "Outstanding Performance Talent Award," with bonuses of NT$10,000 to NT$50,000. Another 5% will receive the "Excellent Performance Talent Award," with bonuses of NT$5,000 to NT$10,000.

A key feature of the new system is the " Executive Bauhinia Award," which offers a top prize of NT$100,000, honorary leave, and opportunities for international exchanges with partner universities.

Ying-Hsuan Chu (朱盈璇), this year's top administrative performer, said she loves the work environment at NTHU and feels recognized for her efforts. She believes the new system will boost morale and encourage innovation.

Chao-Hsu Wang (王朝旭), a security team member who has served at NTHU for nearly 30 years, handling tasks such as traffic control, campus patrols, and recently assisting with a lab fire rescue, was also among this year's outstanding staff. He believes the increased bonuses demonstrate the university's appreciation for administrative staff, enhancing everyone's enthusiasm for work.

Since becoming president, President W. John Kao has proposed five development strategies, including creating a people-centered environment. The "Tsing Hua Talent Development Fund" aims to invest in a sustainable fund, with returns used to reward outstanding faculty and administrative staff.
