The NTHU Racing Team holds a technology presentation, unveiling the eighth-generation race car.
The NTHU Racing Team, renowned for its outstanding achievements in international competitions, held a technology showcase on July 18th. They unveiled Taiwan's first student-made lightweight carbon fiber rim, which will be used in their next-generation car to achieve weight reduction goals. The team also upgraded the control software for their electric race car, planning to compete in Formula SAE competitions next year.
The NTHU Racing Team introduced an autonomous vehicle and participated in the European Formula Student competition last August. At the Czech Republic competition, they secured second place in the autonomous vehicle category of skidpad and won the Best Car Inspection Award. Unfortunately, in the more competitive Formula Student Germany, severe damage to the car prevented them from finishing.
Team captain Cheng-Han Yu (余承翰) observed that top teams used carbon fiber components to reduce overall weight, prevent deformation, and increase cornering speed. This inspired the decision to focus on developing carbon fiber components this year instead of competing abroad.
Yu reported that the team successfully developed lightweight carbon fiber wheels and car shells, reducing the wheel's weight by 60% compared to the previous aluminum version. The car's total weight is now 260 kg, which the team hopes to reduce to under 200 kg with the new carbon fiber wheels and car shell.
The NTHU Racing Team is also dedicated to advancing unmanned vehicle technology. Hao-Ming Teng (鄧皓銘), a master's student and Chief Technology Officer of the unmanned vehicle group, stated that they improved their visual recognition algorithm, increasing operation speed by 50%, and added camera recognition, enhancing track identification accuracy by more than twofold.
At the July 18th showcase, the team demonstrated their eighth-generation car, "TH08," highlighting its upgraded anti-slip and cornering assistance systems. Yu mentioned that after software upgrades, the TH08 set a team record of 4.63 seconds in a figure-eight test at the Automative Research and & Testing Center in May, close to the top speed at last year's Formula Student Germany, greatly motivating the team.
Deputy team captain Shu-Wei Shen (沈書煒), a senior in the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering, shared that they have test-driven the vehicle over 200 km over the past six months, finally achieving their goals. The team is thrilled that their hard work has paid off.
The NTHU Racing Team expressed its gratitude to Argosy and FitTech, which were founded by alumni from the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering, for their support. They also welcomed META Industrial as a new sponsor.
The team currently comprises 80 members, one-third of whom are female. Professors Chao-An Lin (林昭安) and Pei-Jen Wang (王培仁) guide the team, which includes students from the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Interdisciplinary Program of Engineering, Economics, Environmental Sciences, Education, and Kinesiology.
