Chenggong Lake at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan was renovated last year, and is now lit up at night, making it even more beautiful. On September 27, for the first time, a large open-air concert will be held next to the Lake under the moonlight, paired with a light and shadow show provided by drones, in an audio-visual feast combining technology and music. In addition to teachers, students, and alumni, the general public is also welcome to attend.

Fang-Yu Chang (張芳宇), dean of the College of Arts and director of the Preparatory Office of the NTHU Chun-shan UMC Concert Hall, said that amongst the many cultural events to be held on campus this year are five free concerts, four indoor and one outdoor.

A Night on the Lake Blending Music and Technology
Dubbed “The Magic Music Box,” the concert begins at 7:30 pm on September 27, and features BrassMen and the Taipei Wind Orchestra & Symphonic Band. The open seating arrangement will allow the audience to freely move about, and the music will be accompanied by visual effects provided by the drones.

Also performing at the concert will be Cinema Paradiso, Jacky Cheung (張學友), Tom Chang (張雨生), and Wubai (伍佰), providing a mix of styles sure to please one and all.

Dilbèr, the Nightingale of the East
On September 10, internationally renowned soprano Dilbèr will hold a recital at the Hsinchu Performing Arts Center. After winning third place in the Mirjam Helin International Vocal Competition in Finland she became a lifelong soloist at the Finnish National Opera. Fang-Yu Chang (張芳宇) said that Dilbèr is a dazzling comet in the world of vocal music, known for her natural skills and excellent tone.

In the first half of her recital, Dilbèr will perform various popular songs, including Alfred Bachelet's “Chère nuit” and Franz List's “Oh! quand je dors.” In the second half, she will perform various Chinese art songs, including “Flowers Are Not Flowers” and “West Lake after the Rain.”

A Musical Extravaganza Under the Autumn Moon
The first concert in the series, held in July and titled “A Magnificent Baroque Concerto,” featured the renowned Dutch recorder player Erik Bosgraaf performing with NTHU's Baroque orchestra. The second concert, held on September 6 and titled “Autumn Flowers Attract Trout,” featured Fang-Yu Chang (張芳宇) accompanied by the famous French chamber orchestra Sylf and pianist Wei-Lung Li (李威龍), performing such mid-autumn favorites as “The Moon Represents My Heart” and “La Vie en Rose.”

The third concert in the series, to be held on September 20 and titled “Our Musical Heritage,” will feature a student group led by Fang-Yu Chang (張芳宇) and accompanied by pianist Wei-Lung Li (李威龍) and trombonist Kuang-Ching Sung (宋光清).

The World-Class Chun-Shan UMC Concert Hall
Chang said that the Main Auditorium is currently being converted into a world-class concert hall to commemorate former NTHU president Shen Chun-Shan Shen (沈君山). The project has been made possible by a generous donation from United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), as well as donations from numerous business leaders and alumni.

As a warm up for the new concert hall, the Chun-Shan UMC Concert Hall Preparatory Office and the Arts Center is organizing a series of concerts titled “Music Under the Moon,” in cooperation with the College of the Arts and the NTHU Committee of 100. All the concerts are free, but tickets must be obtained in advance. For more information, call (03) 571-5131 ext. 42899.
