The College of Arts at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan is preparing to perform an original musical, showcasing the school's diversity and cross-disciplinary education. Tomorrow's Dream will be performed at the Hsinchu County Performance Hall on December 7, with free tickets available to the public.

Tomorrow's Dream tells the story of a Ruiya (瑞亞), a doctor who dreams of escaping to the mountains as the end of the world approaches. In his dream, he goes on a fantasy adventure accompanied by a mysterious girl named Xiaoya (小芽). When he wakes up, he discovers that Xiaoya is his daughter, now in a coma. Through their relationship, the touching and meaningful story explores family ties and environmental sustainability.

College of Arts dean Fang-Yu Chang (張芳宇) said that the production of Tomorrow's Dream provides vocal and music students with an opportunity to showcase their talents and explore career directions in fields such as performance and stage design.

The initial audition was held in June of this year, attracting 26 students from 14 departments, demonstrating the diverse talents of the student body. A total of 15 students were selected to participate in the production, including stage hands, and rehearsals began in August.

Zhu-Xuan Huang (黃筑萱), a sophomore in the Department of Music, plays the heroine Xiaoya, whose character she developed through observation and careful study. She also used her vocal expertise to help the other performers improve their singing skills. She said, “This was my first time to participate in such a large-scale production, so I was really nervous and excited” that the experience has improved her professional abilities and enhanced her confidence on stage.

Hong-Yun Jian (簡宏芸), a student from the College of Technology Management, plays seven characters in the play, including the devil and Little Three Dog, a character with three personalities. She found it quite challenging, but in the process she learned a lot about how to concretely express abstract ideas on stage, honed her teamwork skills, and overcame some of the constraints of her self-image.

Another actor in the play is Jun-Yu Tang (湯竣宇), a dual major in counseling and music, who served as a singing coach for the production during the summer rehearsals, and even made a training video. He said, “Teaching my classmates to sing also improved my own singing; I found it to be a new and valuable experience.

The role of Dr. Ruiya is played by Chang-Ching Ho (何長慶), an accomplished singer and actor, who is also chairman of Katech R&D, an affiliate of Tung Ho Steel. He previously appeared in the school's production of Salem Storm, and is a longtime supporter of art and cross-disciplinary.

The script was written by theater director Zhi-Wen Zheng (鄭智文) and was first performed nine years ago. The current production is a re-adaptation by Associate Professor Qing-Zhang Wang (汪慶璋), g it a new look and add dramatic tension. The costume and makeup design was carried out in collaboration with the Department of Fashion Design at Hsuan Chuang University.

Funding for NTHU's production of Tomorrow's Dream was provided by the NTHU Alumni Association and the Spring Foundation, and the total production budget was about NT$4 million. The musical will be performed on December 7, 2024, at 7:30 pm. Tickets can be requested online at: https://forms.gle/iS6Bc5vPKmJ3oGjo6. For details, please call (03) 571-5131, extension 78811.
