The 26th Distinguished Alumni Awards were approved by the Selection Committee on December 27, 2024. The recipients are Keng-Huei Kao (高耿輝), Jau-Ho Jean (簡朝和), Hsiao-Chin Tuan (段孝勤), and Tsun-Gte Sun (孫宗德) of National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan.
Keng-Huei Kao (Department of Nuclear Engineering, Class of 1977B)
Kao has made outstanding accomplishments in operations and management in the semiconductor industry while leading a top enterprise, at the same time making substantial contributions to his alma mater and society.
Kao graduated from the Department of Nuclear Engineering in 1977 and founded Unisonic Technologies Co., Ltd. in 1990, a leading integrated circuit manufacturer in Taiwan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Unisonic assisted global manufacturers in resolving material shortages. The company now operates two wafer fabrication plants, one packaging and testing facility, and multiple design subsidiaries, with an annual turnover of NT$10–13 billion. In 2023, Unisonic achieved a revenue growth rate of 25.76% and was selected as a “Golden Brick Enterprise” from among 5,000 private companies by the China Credit Information Service.
Kao has been a dedicated supporter of NTHU, donating NT$1 million in 2010 for the Alumni Gymnasium and nearly NT$10 million over subsequent years. He also spearheaded a NT$10 million donation from his 1977 classmates on the occasion of their 40th reunion. Kao encourages students to prioritize health, cultivate learning interests, embrace workplace challenges, and uphold NTHU's motto: “Self-discipline and social commitment.”
Jau-Ho Jean (Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Class of 1979B, 1981G)
Jean is an expert in ceramic materials who manages a top enterprise. He has educated countless students and made substantial contributions to his alma mater and society.
Since receiving a master's degree from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1981, Jean has published more than 100 SCI papers, obtained dozens of patents, and won many professional honors in Taiwan and abroad. He is an expert in ceramic materials for wireless communications. In 1998 he established Advanced Ceramics X (ACX), a leading company in the development of low-temperature co-fired ceramic technology.
Jean has supported NTHU by fostering the Materials Science Alumni Association and by funding the construction and maintenance of the ACX Lecture Hall. He urges students to be reliable, to develop both technical and soft skills, and to apply knowledge practically, striving to become the “top 1%” of talent.
Hsiao-Chin Tuan (Department of Electrical Engineering, Class of 1981B, 1983G; EMBA of 2014G)
Tuan has long been an important figure in the research and development of advanced semiconductor processes, leading to major scientific and technological advances. He has made major contributions to both NTHU and society.
Tuan graduated from the Institute of Electrical Engineering in 1983 and completed his EMBA degree in 2014; he received the National Outstanding Manager Award in 2023. Tuan has made major technological breakthroughs in areas such as photolithography technology and process integration. He is currently a senior director and associate manager at TSMC.
Guided by his “boiling water theory” of perseverance, Tuan has supported NTHU through donations to the Chun-Shan UMC Concert Hall and the College of Semiconductor Research, establishing scholarships, mentoring students, and teaching semiconductor courses. He advises students to pursue their passions, build a strong knowledge foundation, develop logical thinking and teamwork, and adapt to industry changes through continuous learning.
Tsun-Gte Sun (Bachelor of Science, Class of 2013B)
Sun has pioneered healthy pet food innovations and excelled as a young entrepreneur in cross-border e-commerce. He has also made significant contributions to NTHU and society.
Sun graduated in 2013 with a specialization in materials and electrical machinery. He founded Planddo Co., Ltd., launching the “DogCatStar” brand, which has grown into Taiwan's largest pet food group, serving over 3 million customers and earning the iF Design Award. In 2023, Sun received the Model Entrepreneur Award and was named as one of Taiwan's Top 100 MVP Managers.
Sun's company adheres to the principles of sustainable development, partnering with Man Fair Social Enterprise in Hsinchu and donating over 10,000 kilograms of pet food.
